RESEARCH
aesthetics - elements that the film shows on screen as well as the message it conveys through visual communication. This will tie together the style, tone, look or mood of a film. This can be done with camera moments, lighting, placement, colours, set design and dress-code.
space and composition- the position of objects/characters within the shot. A common rule that is used is the rule of thirds, i use this to make sure the object/character in shot is being placed in the right place for the way you want to portray them. For instance a powerful main character will be shown in the centre.
acting- the task of portraying another character on screen or changing their emotions and actions as scripted.
technical aspects- how equipment is set up to capture the action occurring on screen. This can involve camera angles, cinematography and lighting.
sound- sound can be split into sections, diegetic and non diegetic. Diegetic is sound that characters on screen can hear then non diegetic is any sound the audience can hear but characters on screen cant. Sound can also be sound effects/foley, background music and ambience there are no limits.
editing- Editing is assembling shots in a coherent sequence and they tend to manage the flow of a scene through how many cuts they use. The amount of cuts in a clip is based on the emotions portrayed. A high action scene will have quick cuts to keep the fast pace than a sad emotional scene will have less cuts to keep a slow pace allowing you to connect with the character better.
Narrative- This is the story telling device for all forms of media, that create a story from begging to end. A narrative format is equilibrium, disruption and resolution. These are shown in most films falling into three different acts.
representation- This is the nature of mirroring certain traits including various stereotypes, races, communities, social issues, mediation and visual codes, historical period accuracy and more. Representation just highlights how a media text is put together and how digital media can influence how we see others and how we see ourselves. For instance a strong female representation is going to affect how others see themselves as its empowering.
dialogue- Its a spoken exchange between one or more characters. Dialogue can be recorded in different ways, some of them are taken from the camera meaning you have raw audio or another is extremely recorded which is ADR. An example of ADR is in star wars, Darth Vader is wearing a mask so they were able to find someone with a more chilling and convincing voice to replace the audio with in post production.
ambience- This is the background noise that is heard in the atmosphere you are filming in. This could consist of wind, cars, chatter and machine humming. The ambience adds a layer to the film that you needs for it to pull together well.
sound effects/foley- everything on screen that interacts with one another should have some form of SFX added in unless it does not fit the theme for the film. These are both post production elements which are used to enhance the mood and it's a big element in film. Foley sound is were you create sound effects in a performing technique instead, allowing you to create a more detailed effect.
diegetic and non diegetic- diegetic sound comes from the stetting of the film like voices of characters or music being played on screen. While non diegetic is something that comes from our world, such as soundtrack or scoring. Non diegetic is used to add a certain effect like tension or emotion to a scene as a soundtrack can manipulate our emotions.
soundtrack- The soundtrack used in scene will connote a certain mood adding emphasis on the scene. A harsh soundtrack can lead you to think something bad is about to happen gaining more tension from the audience.
post production alterations- These are alterations made in post production were you might hear a phone call scene and its muffled. Or you could even edit part of the audio out to change a scene completely.
aesthetics
Very intense hectic mood, communication done mostly through shouting. The men are following the stereotypical conventions of being mad and full of rage. Crime genre elements through dialogue and props Underlying message is to not jump to conclusions and who is actually in control. Dark lighting with red tint adding to the villian colour connotations. Symmetrical setting in the background. Mixture of different camera angles. Whoever had the gun had the upper hand showing the power a weapon can have and how dangerous it is in the wrong hands.
space and composition
Extreme close up on screw to show hope? Villian placed higher up in the composition, Luther placed lower down to show the place of power. Very big amount of space and only using a small section making the scene more intense and loud visually. Close up on gun to show the possible danger. Dress code shows who the main bad dude is. he is dressed smarter with a hat. he is also placed in the middle of the line at the start. Luther does not show in the centre of the composition tends to be more to the left to show he is not in control, then i believe he moves to the centre of the composition when he gets the gun and finally has control.
aesthetics

This is a very visually appealing scene but very loud and hectic showing what drugs mean or do to Rue. This scene is visually showing rues relapse and how it's making her feel. There is no dialogue at all allowing you to just watch the message being told. They are all wearing the same clothes.
space and composition

The mise-en-scene in the scene is clearly shown allowing you to connect with the characters location. One of the locations is her bedroom which is personal, then outside which shows freedom. There is symmetry in this scene emphasising it allowing you to notice its important. Rues composition placement in scenes are all over the place showing she has lack of control.
acting

The emotion in this scene is very raw and right there for you to see. It's laying everything out. The way Rue mouths along to the song which is played as non diegetic music could show how dugs make her a different person.
technical aspects

The lighting in this scene is dark accept for one part where she sees her dad. Dark lighting adds more depth to the atmosphere of the shot. A lot of the angles are birds eye view shots. This makes rue look more venerable as we are looking down at her.
sound

A song is played in the background and it adds to the visuals as Rue mouths along making the song important and prominent. Makes you actually listen to the words being said and pay attention to it since there is also no dialogue in the scene. The dance also links to the beat of the song allowing it to flow well. Part way through a band joins in as diegetic sound and it plays along to the soundtrack added on. This layered up sounds adds a chaotic element to the scene.
editing

The editing starts slow and you are on certain sections for a while until Rue is leaving her bedroom. The journey from her bedroom to her family is so chaotic and a mess that the editing almost resembles that as well. Then the editing calms down again leaving the cuts very slow and she settles down and other elements take over.
narrative

This is just showing what is happening inside Rues mind. The narrative does not make sense and you jump from one setting to another almost like a dream. The character we are following is not a stable narrator so we end up with a hectic plot to follow. This is the season finale so this is a plot twist and something you don't expect to happen.
representation

This series is a "honest portrait of addiction, anxiety and the difficulties of navigating life today" It does not hide away and shows the reality. It has great LGBTQ+ representation, one of the main characters Jules is transgender and there are multiple gay characters. It generally highlights a lot of key teen problems making it extremely raw and truthful. In this scene its main focus is on the representation of drugs.

dialogue
This scene has no dialogue which means the character rue is on her feet and moving around to make sure the audience has something to look at.
ambience
There is a room ambience to help with the complete silence in the bedroom scene before rue replaces. You can also hear her mum talking on the phone in the background once Rue gets into the kitchen.
sound FX
possible foley sound in this scene could be right at the start when Rue is walking along the path in the rain and you can hear her footsteps. This could have been created in a studio to have a more accurate and defined sound.
score/music
The scene relies on the music in the background, the song was made for this scene and Rue mouths along to the song. The song is there to add more emotional contagion.
diegetic sound/non diegetic sound
The non diegetic sound is the background music thats been added on, the song is called All for us. The diegetic sound in the scene is the band in the back that play along to the song.
where are certain sounds recorded
most of the scene is filmed outside meaning the sound needs to be altered to fit an outside location.
aesthetics
Prominent red theme which can have connotations of love and maya and carina are a couple. A very loud and emotional scene just like the sound.
space and composition
You can see the whole mise-en-scene in the background but having the fire truck right there tells you exactly where they are straight away. Carina is very rarely in the centre of the scene until after she screams showing the power and how she is in control of her emotions. There are a couple birds view camera angles allowing you to take the whole setting in as well as making the characters seem venerable. There are also close up shots of them both screaming getting all their emotions in the shot.
acting
The acting is very raw, emotional and intense making it a very moving scene. The two characters have amazing chemistry as well making it even better.
technical aspects
The lighting has a red tint to it because of the fire truck sirens. This adds to making the scene more intense as red is a very explosive colour.
sound
The sound is extremely loud and chaotic as you have the fire truck sirens, screaming and the background music at the end. The sound is layered on top of each other. The first part with the screaming has not background music leaving it very realistic allowing the actors to control the scene. Then the music comes in when they hug adding to the emotional contagion.
editing
The editing quite quick and has 17 cuts throughout a 58 second scene. The amount of cuts show how chaotic the scene is letting the scene flow better with how you are meant to perceive it. Slow cuts would have let the scene move slowly and peacefully which is not what the scene needs.
narrative
The narrative is very grief driven as Carina has just lost her brother and needs to let her emotions out, so Maya takes her to the station to scream it out. Its a very simple but beautiful scene showing the love they have for each other and how you should let your emotions out and grieve with the help of others if needed.
representation
This shows great LGBTQ+ representation as Maya and Carina are in a relationship. Carina is a lesbian and Maya is bisexual.
dialogue
The dialogue in the scene is a conversation happening between two people.
ambience
It's a very natural room ambience as the fire station room they are in is void of other people meaning its very quiet.
sound FX
Possible foley sound is the fire truck sirens or when Carina smacks the fire truck. The foley sound would make it sound more real as you can pick up the sound from the real thing very easily well.
score/music
The only background music is at the end of the scene when the characters are hugging, the music adds more emotion to the scene letting you know how the director wants you to feel.
diegetic sound/non diegetic sound
The sound happening is diegetic as its happening on screen like the fire truck sirens, it's a natural source. The non diegetic would be the background music added on at the end.
where are certain sounds recorded
The sounds are all filmed inside a fire station meaning it's a huge area making it reverberant.
reflective cycle
reflective cycle- self reflective, able to take in everything you need. You will be able to tell the difference between evaluation and reflection with the reflective cycle.
Gibbs reflective cycle:
description-
what happened, when did it occur, who was there, what did they do, what did you do.
feelings-
how did you feel when you did this, thoughts at the time, thoughts afterwards, any emotions from your team, did your impact and personal goals make a differnce. If working in a group you should talk about pos, neg emotions about members in team and their contributions to the success or failure.
evaluation-
what went well, what didn't go well, good/bad experience, was there a difficult situation... if so did you feel it was resolved.
analysis-
why did things go right/wrong, could i have responded differently to help things, compare you experience with your prior knowledge (theory).
conclusion-
what can i now do better, what fundamental skills do i need to improve on, what have you learnt. link this to general and specific. general- entire assessment. specific- personal experience. wrap up of the entire project.
action plan-
where can i use my new experience, how can i use the knowledge/techniques I've picked up, if this were to happen again what would i do differently.

The text above is a great way of writing your evaluations, as you will cover every point you need. There are six stages to it and in those six stages you have prompts to help you. Then we got given the task to do the analysis out of the reflective cycle for one of our recent activities. We decided on Southampton as we could get a variation of responses. Bellow is our groups answers to each section.
Analysis- Southampton
Why did things go right/wrong?
Right?
Managed to explore the university of Southampton. Some of the courses were fun and educational such as animation and 360 filming. Managed to trial out the course. Got to learn the different courses available: a lot of variety. The facilities worked well with the people that were involved meaning everyone was accompanied for.
Wrong?
They weren't always prepared meaning some where rushed or made up. Camera course person didn't show up meaning there was no preparation and all improvised. Didn't get a good experience. Courses also finished early meaning there was time that we needed to kill. Prepare more
Could I responded differently to help things?
Maybe contribute more with the questions asked. They could've given us more equipment to challenge ourselves more especially with the 360 filming we could've filmed more with better quality.
Compare your experience with prior knowledge?
The animation course was really practical and educational telling us how animation is used in different parts and how the human bodies anatomy works. We then looked at different examples of students work to get an insight of what is asked of them. 360 filming get a better understanding of filming and how VR has changed.
Overall
Most subjects were good and accompanied for all the subjects however with some subjects they were less professional and educational- We rated it 3.5/5 as overall experience.
