CLASS TASKS

I want it that way

First we picked our groups of around 11 people and chose our roles. I decided to be a criminal along with 4 others. All of the roles were director, camera operator, boom operator, sound engineer, clapper board, cops and criminals. Everyone in the group had a role and we all set up to recreate the Brooklyn 99, I want it that way scene. We took the green screen room which meant we would need to add the backgrounds on in editing.

To begin with we watched the video we were recreating and made the props we needed, this allowed us to learn our lines and get into character better. I decided to take a Santa hat as my prop while others took drinks and more hats then we had a certain number on a paper showing what criminal we were. We took a riffle microphone and a table as the cops props to imitate the scene. Then we all got into position and decided to start shooting. When filming we had Rhys count down from 10 and after 5 he would snap the clapper board down. This is so that filming and sound recording can link the clips together in editing. The first time we filmed it was handheld, this didn't give us a good outcome meaning we rerecorded everything on a tripod after lunch. We didn't get time to finish everything so Austins close up scenes were not filmed.

This above is the edited version of what my group filmed. To begin with our group noticed we did not label the videos we recorded, so we had to watch a video and then search for the audio that linked with. In the future I will label everything so post production can get started straight away making it more professional. After I finally finished locating each pairing I imported them into Adobe Premiere Pro.

I then placed the video clips and the audio that matched it into the timeline. Then first thing I did was unlink the audio from the video which allowed me to synchronise the audio recorded separately with the worse video audio. Once it's in time with the video I deleted the video audio and kept the professional one.

I watched the Brooklyn 99 clip to make sure I got it as accurate as I could, but without Austins close ups jumping between the two characters didn't work so I only have one close up of Emily used. I went through and cut and adjusted clips so they all flowed nicely and I liked the outcome. Some of the recorded clips where smaller in scale meaning I had to scale them up to 150. This made the videos more pixilated for when I added the green screen images.

I then decided to increase the volume of the audio as the sound must have been recored at a low level whilst recording. I ended up increasing it to 10 on every clip. I also decided to change the preset of the sound. On the ones where Austin and Emily are talking I had a 'podcast voice' preset. Then with the singing scenes I changed the preset to 'vocal presence'

Finally the last step was to add the green screen for the background. I searched up a police background and a height board for my two scenes and downloaded them so I could import them into my premiere pro. I started with the police background so I made sure each clip of Austin and Emily had a background under it. For when Emily has a close up the background needs to zoom in with her, so I scaled the image up to 200. Then for the height board background I did the same by placing it under every clip with the view of the criminals. This clip imported into my image really small so I scaled it up to 420 so it fit the whole screen. Then on the three close up scenes i zoomed in the image to 600. For the first close up I positioned the background image to the left more as it was showing criminal number 1 and 2. Then I also changed the positioning on the third close up, moving it more to the right as it was the criminal number 4 and 5. By doing this it tied everything together better.

Above you can see the effect 'ultra key'. I dragged this effect onto the video making sure an image was bellow it, then pressed the 'key colour' section and pressed the green colour on the video with the tool provided. This then allows you to see the background, but its not the best quality. So to change that I moved the 'pedestal' all the way up allowing the image to be less pixilated. I also decided to move the 'tolerance' all the way up, 'softened' it by 2 and added 5 'contrast'. I didn't want to soften it too much or it would blend the two images together too much. I copied and pasted this keyframe onto every clip allowing my green screen background to come together.

This is a cutaway video task. I decided to base it on my day out in Brighton, so I took videos throughout the day. It shows my day from start to finish in quick short clips. The video last about 20 seconds and every clip last around 1 second.

To do this I imported my clips into Premiere Pro and then dragged the clip I wanted to use out into the timeline and cut it down to the second I wanted to use. I repeated this process for every clip and left the one at the end with sound but had the sound fade out. To do this I adjusted the level of the sound at the start and the end to create a gradual fade. The settings for that is on the right. Some of my clips needed to be scaled up as I thought I would add some of my Snapchat videos. These had to be scaled up to 300 most of the time.

The first clip I used I had to slow down so it could last long enough in a good position. I slowed it down to 30% which i thought worked well. I did this by right clicking the clip and pressing 'speed\duration' which then gives you the options the image on the right is showing. The one I used was to change the speed, I slowed it down a lot. I did this at different levels for some of the clips.

However I decided I wanted background music so I went onto garage band and dragged some beats in to make an upbeat track. These beats were called, 'beyond deep beat' and '80's ballad chords'. I used two versions of the 80's ballad chords to make sure it was not to repeated as much which makes an interesting variation. Though it will end up having repetition as its a loop.

After I did that i exported my new track and imported into premiere pro. I dragged it into my timeline and played the clip but I didn't like the fact the videos didn't match the beats so I rearranged it all to fit along with adding extra clips near the end. Then I saved and exported my work in media encoder and uploaded it to youtube.

Super Mario Odyssey

Write down all the sounds you hear in the video played-

  • wind, ambient sound
  • grass swaying from the wind, ambient sound
  • dinosaur stomping, heavy footsteps
  • dinosaur rawr, very loud
  • waterfalls, constant
  • birds, a group of them flying away
  • Mario sound
  • swish from dinosaur tail, hits the camera
  • Mario hat swish
  • mud/gravel flying and hitting the floor from dinosaur footsteps

In this class we were looking at the topic of sound design, we got a folder full of ambient sounds and sound effects which we were to use to add sound to a Mario trailer. First I started by downloading the sounds for the task which were in ALO. Then I opened Adobe Audition and created a multitrack named 'Mario Sound Design'.

The next part was the roar, for this I found a growl in the downloaded section and dragged it into my timeline. This growl is not long enough for the whole growl so we had to stretch it. To do this we right clicked the clip and pressed stretch realtime, which took us to the properties were we can change the pitch and duration. I changed my clips duration to 7 seconds by lowering the pitch to -24.  In the video the dinosaur swooshes his tail across the screen twice. To make this I dragged the swoosh audio in and used it twice. The second swoosh needed a longer duration so I did the same thing I did with the dinosaur growl to make it longer.

Next we watched the video over and roughly marked were the dinosaur stomped, once I got them all I went back and adjusted each one to the shake on the screen. This made sure that is was all accurate and in the right position. Then I went onto the downloaded folder and found all the footsteps and chose 4 different ones I liked. This gave a variation to the video and made it more realistic.  Then I dragged each of these steps into the timeline and lined them with the markers, to stop them from overlapping added them on 4 different audio tracks. To finish this section of we watched the video to see if they all matched or if any steps didn't work.

First we watched the video over to analyse all the possible sound and wrote it down in a list. This list is shown above. After we added a 'jungle day' soundtrack which is considered an ambience. This consisted of birds, grass, waterfalls and more. To add to the ambience we added a waterfall soundtrack. This clip was not long enough though so we had to crossfade them. Part way through a flock of birds are seen so we added that in as well. We panned this from the right to the left which imitates the birds on the screen. Then I did the same thing for the ending where another flock of birds is seen during the roar. I also added the jungle soundtrack over the roar where birds can be heard to add to the flock.

So for the final part we added sounds for the Mario hat and Mario. For these I used the switch sound effect and Mario swooshes. i placed the switch first which then flowed into three Mario swooshes for where the hat spins and lands on the dinosaurs head. I also decided I wanted a switch sound at the start were the trailer begins for the switch logo. Then finally i added Mario saying 'here we go' which is placed over a swoosh.

automated dialogue replacement (ADR)

  • remove unwanted sounds
  • change original lines
  • improve undertstandebilaity
  • use better singer if the actor is unable to deliver a good enough sung performance
  • add or remove content for legal purposes like a trademark name
  • foul language
  • replace mistakes

We got given a video where ADR was needed meaning we had to match up the audio (on Adobe Audition) to the video and add sound effects to make the video look professional. The picture on the right is the competed work with the audio synced up to the best of my ability and sound effects added in for footsteps and thudding for when the detective pushes the reporter and he hits the wall.

I then needed to add a reverb to the audio so it fit the theme it was set in. Having something filmed in a staircase means it's going to be very reverberant so I change the reverb to the 'great hall' setting allowing it to sound more echoey. This picture on the side shows my settings for the effect. I had some issues with getting the reverb to sound good and not too reverberant. In the end i had Caitlin check her settings against mine and we found the difference which was the 'decay time' and 'diffusion' settings. I then saved this version and used it on other audio sections to pull it all together nicely.

Need for speed

This is going to need a fast upbeat track to keep up with the speed car racing in the video. Along with maybe a deep bass or rock tune to match the idea of an exhaust from a car. It needs to keep people energised and interested so maybe a funky tune.

We got a choice out of three videos to design some music for the trailers. I chose the Need for speed trailer as it seemed more fast and upbeat. I imported this into garage band with no sound so I could watch the video while adding music to see if it matched.

Next I looked at different loops on garage band until I found one that I liked, I focused my search in the rock genre area. Then when I found loops I liked I added them into my sequence. The first loop I added was aggressive stance bass and duplicated this twice and this was done by pressing option and dragging it across.

As the video changed i added a new loop which was called bell ringer beat to add a different ambience feel. This scene needed something extra so I added an alpha male bass which made the music more upbeat. I cut the clip short for the fourth copy so that the beat above would be playing on its own. This matched the pace of the video allowing it to run more smoothly.

I went back to using aggressive stance for the next scene, however I added alarming base to make it sound more compact which will make it more appealing for audiences as its not the same throughout.

The clip changed again so I added back alley bass which was a louder and quicker beat to increase the atmosphere as you watch the clip. during this I added back alley lead guitar 1 and 2 to make the section unique creating a random change in beat. This is only playing for the middle section in the bass to make it more impactful.

Finally to end the video I went back to aggressive stance as it was frequently used throughout the video leading to it being recognised more.  After i added these I thought some sectioned needed more variety so I added a small melody cut of from early days synth lead 4. This is played randomly 3 times in the video. To tie it all together I added a drum beat for the whole duration that matches the tune I created. I used electro trap for the drum which I believed matched really well creating the right atmosphere.

I was struggling at the end as my loop was not long enough to cover the last section, so I just placed the aggressive stance loop in which does not work perfectly but it's not the worst. I couldn't find anything that fit well in that last gap so I left it.

Phone FX

First I downloaded a phone ring and a telephone conversation and imported it into Adobe Audition. I dragged these into a multitrack on different sections. To begin I edited the phone ring by leaving one ring and a quiet section then copied and pasted it three times. I then cut the third one done like the call was answered through a ring. Next I cut the phone call conversation into the two voices and dragged the second voice onto another section for a better layout.

Then I pressed the 'FX' button to allow the effects bars to show up in my audio editing area. This is were I started making the first voice more tiny like a phone call. To do this I pressed the side arrow then went to 'Filter and EQ' then pressed 'FFT Filter' which brought up the grid with a blue line. This image is shown in the slide show on the left. I then added dots by pressing the line and arranged it so only he middle frequencies played. I rearranged it until i got the right tiny effect.

The next effect I added to every clip was a convolution reverb. This allowed me to change the 'impulse' of the audio. I changed track 2 to inside a car and the track 3 and 1 to large bathroom. Track 3 and 1 have to be the same as the call was ringing on the yellow persons phone. By doing that it makes the clip more professional.

to place the convolution reverb on the phone ring I saved the reverb I made on track 3 and named it 'bathroom effect'. Then I went on track one created the effect and went to the presets bar instead, 'bathroom effect' was there and i pressed it. This allowed me to get the same effect I had on track 3 making it link perfectly. Once all of that was done I played with the levels turning down track 1 and 2 then turning up track 3. I made sure each level didn't reach the red on the audio bar.

I learned how to use effects on Adobe Audition by doing this task, and having this technique is really important for future tasks if there are any phone call scenes.

I think the editing for the sound went really well and i would feel confident in doing the same thing again.

I could have made the phone ring at the start more realistic with the cut off or have chosen better rooms for the sound to be based in.

Joker task

First we started out by finding the folder with all the downloaded clips we needed which is a sound library and the joker scene. These were located in the m3 folder. I spent time going through the sound library and finding destructions and anything that could work for the outside location sounds. Once I had enough I imported them into premiere pro along with the video clip. I imported this video clip but I will mute it as I am going to replace all the sound in the video.

I dragged the video into the timeline and watched it through with sound so I could get an understanding of what i need to achieve. Then I muted it and started by dragging a factory destruction for the multiple explosions inside. I followed along with my timeline and waited for when the explosions started to place each one which meant they were all accurate. Along with the explosions I added cups, plates and mugs breaking to imitate glass, walls and hospital objects falling everywhere. You should always layer sound as there is rarely ever one layer since sound is so compact and broad. I found a corridor sound to fit the joker walking inside the hospital, this also brought an ambient sound to the scene.

Then the joker goes outside so the atmosphere changes. I found an exterior crowd sound that I added in as a compromise for the crowd freaking out in the background, this also works as my new ambience. Then I repeated the process of adding explosions in and making sure they all lined up well. Then I added a variation of things breaking over it to add the layers. When I saw a lot of glass breaking I tried to add the plate breaking as it was the most realistic glass sound. As another background sound I added breaking brick falling which sounded a lot like the rubble dropping on the ground, I lowered the level to -5 as it was not a main sound and would work better being heard as an after thought. Next I worked on the bus leaving so I used a lorry driving off. This actually fit the bus pretty well, I did have to cut the clip when the camera angle changes and lowered the sound to -5 since the new camera angle is further away. I finally added this noise that fit the button clicking the best and layered it over top of each other as its a very quick process. This completed the task so I exported it and uploaded it to YouTube.
